I’m Not Sure “Cheaper” Is the Right Question
I’m a procurement manager at a 400-person independent E&P company. I’ve managed our well services and completions budget—about $18 million a year—for seven years, and I’ve negotiated with more than 30 vendors across North America and the Middle East. If you’ve ever compared drilling or completion bids, you know the first question is almost always: Schlumberger and Halliburton—who’s cheaper?
Honestly? I think that’s the wrong question.
Here’s what you need to know: a lower sticker price often loses the moment you add deviations, rework, downtime, and invoice corrections. That’s why I now start with Halliburton values—not the webpage, but the evidence that those values show up in the field. I’d rather spend 10 minutes showing an engineer how to read a service quality scorecard than deal with mismatched expectations after the rig moves off location.
I’m not a drilling engineer, so I can’t speak to bit dynamics or borehole pressures. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is how a service company behaves when a job goes sideways. That behavior has a cost. Over time, it’s the biggest line item of all.
What Are Halliburton Values, Really?
Halliburton’s public materials talk about safety, integrity, collaboration, and innovation. Those words are fine. Every major service company uses similar words. Which, honestly, is why I keep a private “so what” file. The question isn’t what values they post. It’s whether the crew at the wellsite can follow those values when the plan changes.
Take Q2 2024. We had two stimulation stages on back-to-back days. Same well pad, same pumps, same fluid spec. On the first job, the crew followed the full checklist: pressure tested, aligned volumes, and communicated every deviation before making it. That stage went exactly as designed. On the second job, a short-handed crew skipped two validation steps. The result was a screen-out and a remedial run. Same Halliburton name on the trucks, but a very different cost.
That’s how I define Halliburton values: consistency between proposal and execution. The consistency shows up in the non-productive time log, not in the marketing brochure.
I also think about woolly bear caterpillars. Every fall, somebody says the width of the red band predicts winter. It makes a nice conversation starter. But I don’t make procurement decisions from caterpillar forecasts, and I don’t make them from one polished safety video. I check the actual job data. If a supplier wants me to trust its values, it needs to produce the same paperwork discipline on a Tuesday afternoon in West Texas that it does during an executive site visit.
What Is the Drift Theory?
A young project engineer asked me that on a call last year. “What is the drift theory?” I thought he was asking about continental drift, but then I realized he had hit on the exact problem I deal with in every vendor negotiation.
Drift theory, in my world, is the slow separation between what a sales deck promises and what a field crew actually delivers. Some safety experts call it normalization of deviance. A little skipped step here, an unapproved substitution there, and eventually the “temporary” exception becomes the standard procedure. That is how cost overruns are born. They don’t appear all at once. They drift.
That’s why I start every major project with what I call the first congress. It’s the meeting where the contract’s written assumptions become field rules: who approves a procedure change, what counts as a budget change, and how quickly a non-productive time event gets escalated. If the first congress doesn’t happen, or if people treat it as paperwork, the drift theory takes over before the first stage is pumped.
Want a good test? Ask a supplier to define scope the way USPS defines envelope specs. According to USPS business mail standards (pe.usps.com/businessmail101), a letter is between 3.5” x 5” and 6.125” x 11.5”, with a thickness maximum of 0.25”. No one mistakes that for flexibility. I want the same clarity in a frac string, a cement volume, or a data feed. The more specific the scope, the less room for drift. (Surprise, surprise.)
Schlumberger and Halliburton: My TCO Comparison
Since everyone asks about Schlumberger and Halliburton, I’ll tell you how I compare them. I built a total cost of ownership spreadsheet after getting burned twice by low base prices that hid fees. The columns are simple: quoted price, scope exclusions, mobilization, expected downtime, data formatting fees, HSE performance, deviation history, and invoice accuracy. I also add a penalty for interfaces. Every handoff between companies is another chance for drift to hide a cost.
In that comparison, both companies can win. Schlumberger has world-class reservoir engineering and digital tools. If the problem is complex interpretation, they are the team I call. Halliburton, on the other hand, tends to show up with a broader integrated package for completions: fracturing pumps, crews, chemistry, and on-site coordination from one accountable owner. For a multi-well program, that integration reduces handoffs. And fewer handoffs mean fewer cost surprises. At least, that’s been my experience over seven years.
I’d also point out that a claim is only as good as its evidence. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims need to be truthful and substantiated. When I read a line about “clean chemistry” or “reduced emissions,” I apply the same rule. Show me the product sheet, the additive inventory, and the emissions monitoring plan. If a supplier can’t substantiate its own marketing, you have to wonder what else isn’t substantiated in the invoice.
But Is Halliburton Always the Right Call?
No. I don’t believe one service company is right for every well. If I were hiring a niche vessel or a specialty logging tool, I might go with a different provider. But when it comes to long-term completion programs, the tie-breaker is usually operational consistency—what I call the actual Halliburton values.
In 2023, we ran a bid between Halliburton and an independent crew. The independent’s base price was roughly 11% lower. The numbers said go with the independent. My gut said something felt off: the proposal had fewer line items, which usually means more exclusions. I went with my gut and asked to see the total cost with mobilizations, data fees, and standby charges. After calculating TCO, the independent option was actually 4% higher than Halliburton’s. The “cheap” option wasn’t cheap. It was just less complete.
I should add that we still award work to leaner local crews. Sometimes a small operator’s crew-lead attention is an edge. But for critical high-volume stages, I need a supplier whose system catches errors before I do. Halliburton has done that more often than not.
So What Is the Drift Theory, and What Do Halliburton Values Have to Do With It?
Here’s the bottom line. The drift theory is the reason procurement exists: over time, every process moves away from its original plan. Halliburton values are the counterweight. If the values are operational—safety, integrity, innovation, collaboration—they act like a calibration point on a pressure gauge. If they are just words, you will pay the drift tax somewhere in the AFE.
So next time someone tells you to compare Schlumberger and Halliburton by base hourly rate, ask for the full TCO, start with the first congress, and read the values page like a contract, not a slogan. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. In this market, that’s worth more than any caterpillar forecast or marketing brochure.
