Scenario A: You Need Deep-Water or Complex Directional Drilling
This is where Halliburton's reputation is built. Their drill bits, measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tools, and logging-while-drilling (LWD) technology are industry standards. If your project involves extended-reach wells, challenging formations, or offshore work, they're a primary contender.
From my side, the paperwork is usually clean. Their invoicing (a major pain point for me) is automated through their iEnergy portal. - Is this a technically challenging well? (Complex geometry, high pressure, HTHP?) → Halliburton is a strong candidate.
- Is this a standard, simple well? (Vertical, onshore, conventional?) → Consider regional competitors for cost savings.
- Is your organization large enough to manage their contract process? (10+ employees, legal support?) → Yes? Their paperwork is manageable. No? You might drown in clauses.
- How critical is guaranteed delivery? (Rig availability = $X/day in demurrage?) → Halliburton's supply chain reliability is a tangible asset.
This isn't rocket science. It's procurement. And as the person who eats the cost when things go wrong, I'd rather spend an hour vetting a vendor than a week explaining a budget overrun.
